5 items that need to be on your checklist when traveling with your senior dog
“Blessed is the person who has earned the love of an old dog.”
-Sidney Jeanne Steward
Bones is a Chihuahua weighing 5 pounds and he was adopted in 2007 from the Humane Society in Pomona, California. At the time of his adoption it was estimated that his age was 8 years old making him to be around 20 years old in 2019. He now lives his retirement years in Lake Elsinore, California and is a roommate to Buster a chihuahua-jack russell terrier mix and Chewy, a fat cat. Since Bones was adopted he has enjoyed many luxuries from sleeping on the bed, homemade food, and the best treats. Bones has traveled all over Southern California since he is older we like to stick to road trips, from San Diego to the Kern River. Bones has stayed in hotels and cabins and will be comfortable as long as he has things to make feel like he is home. Bones requires extra care due to his advanced age. Whenever we decide to travel Bones has necessities he must have on every trip so I have compiled the top 5 items that need to be packed on every road trip for senior dogs.

#5-Clothes
Since Bones has fine fur and almost hairless on his stomach he is very sensitive to cold weather. Bones enjoys visiting the cabin Lake Arrowhead, which can get cold in the winter months and summer evenings. Bones will refuse to go potty outside if it’s too cold for him.

#4-Water
Being a small senior dog Bones usually drinks water at night, but while traveling he tends to get more thirsty, so in this to-go bag he has a bottle of water and bowl for him to drink out of.
#3 Extra Food
Bones is picky when it comes to time to eat due to his sleeping patterns; he will sleep most of the day (which he has earned!) Sometimes he will let his food sit out and go stale so I bring extra for the times he is hungry in the cabin or camping. It’s better to have extra then not prepared!

#2 Dog Purse
Bones is little so a purse made for dogs is perfect for him to travel in! Bones has a leash, but he can’t walk long distances because he will get tired. Being in a bag or purse allows Bones to rest or even take a nap when going places.

#1 Blankets
Bones loves to cuddle up in blankets during all times of the year! Bones is able to get comfortable almost anywhere if he has a blanket he can dig a hole in and especially likes making a mountain of blankets. For a senior dog can be difficult to make outside in time to go to potty! Extra blankets are a must in case of accidents! A garbage bag would also be helpful in case there is not a place to immediately wash the blanket!

Loving a senior dog is more rewarding than one could imagine and it makes me happy to take extra special care of Bones. Senior dogs may require more care especially while taking simple precautions before travel can create more leisure time for you and your dog!
